As obesity levels continue to grow in today’s society it is vital that we as parents break this trend and stop the future generations from following this pattern and becoming obese. To achieve this, parents have to take responsibility and educate their children as there is no denying the initiatives of our government are inadequate.

Although a healthy and balanced nutrition plan is essential for everyone it is even more so for our children. When children begin to grow up and become more mature it is far more difficult to educate them on the great importance of eating healthily as they form their own values and develop their own habits. As a result it is imperative that you start to educate your children from a very young age on the importance of healthy eating. By teaching your children about healthy eating, you can guide them on a healthy pathway into their adult lives and stop them from putting on weight over the years and joining the growing number of obese people. I have gained extensive experience of nutritional principles working in personal training and I have detailed some tips on effectively teaching your children the habits of healthy eating and they are listed below.

There are many alternative ways to approach on educating your children about the importance of healthy eating and I suggest it is favourable to provide choices as opposed to forcing decisions. With that said, it is essential you provide the correct environment for them to make the correct choices by making sure your house contains a large variety of healthy foods and snacks. Additionally, I believe it is a great idea to eat meals as a family at the dinner table as often as you can as this provides the perfect opportunity to show your child healthy eating habits and discuss these principles as you eat. Over time the children will begin to learn these habits and appreciate how to make the correct food choices; favouring healthier options over junk food.

Another great way to educate your children is by involving them in grocery shopping and meal preparation. This gives you child a chance to learn more about food in general by being in that environment and understand the difference between healthy food and junk food and it is possible you could make the occasion into a game to make it more exciting for them.

It should be mentioned that for these strategies to work, it is important that the parents themselves understand the principles of healthy eating and how to make the correct choices. Regretably a large number of parents reading this article will not possess this required knowledge and should improve their own understanding firstly before they attempt to teach their children. If you feel you do not have the relevant education you should firstly improve upon this. You can do this by booking an appointment with a dietician or nutritionist or reading relevant books.

As a final note you must keep in mind that even though we are educating our children on healthy eating habits, they are still children after all. By and large we won’t be allowing junk food but we should still allow them to enjoy a treat once in a while. The occasional high calorie snack will do your child no harm and will actually provide a lesson about rewarding themselves with foods they enjoy.
