Stick with your child's established eating and sleeping schedule as best you can when you are traveling with him or her. Traveling can be scary and stressful for young children. Maintaining the same schedule and rituals as you do at home will allow your child to settle in his or her new environment, ideally letting everyone get plenty of sleep.

You shouldn't give your children every single thing that they want. Give it to them from time to time, but only on your terms. When you give in to every whim, you run the risk of your child learning that they can manipulate you with their emotions.

Children enjoy feeling independent, so assigning them tasks to do as you tidy up can make them feel helpful and confident. For example, if you are preparing to vacuum the floor, have your child help you pick up any toys that are laying around. When you are folding a pile of clean laundry, let the little ones sort out the socks. Helping out around the house will help them to feel independent and gain self-esteem.

If you adopted your child, your child is probably going to find out at some point and start asking questions. Adopted children are going to have questions and will look to you for the answers. They will resent you if you do not tell them the truth about where they came from.

Work with your child to create a warning hand gesture that signals them to stop when they are misbehaving. This is a way to non-verbally warn your child, and give them a chance to straighten up.

No one wants their child to be burdened excessively but it is important that they realize there are challenges they will have to overcome in life. Watching you and your partner solve problems will teach your children the correct ways to resolve their own. Also, it will provide them with a realistic concept of the world.

Create a concise list of guidelines and rules for members of your household. Tell them the consequences for breaking any. Setting rules and limits for your children will show them that you love and care about them enough to do this. Rules will make your parenting job much easier.

It is important to see things from your child's perspective whenever possible. Children put value on things that adults typically see no value in at all. Having a certain crayon may be extremely important to your child while it may not be important to you at all.

Your child will become more confident in his abilities if you allow him to help with a variety of tasks. Allow children to help put away dishes, clean toys and choose their own clothes for the day. When you're getting ready to fold your laundry, let the child have some socks to arrange. The tasks will help them feel as though they are being independent, while giving you a hand.

Children enjoy playing. They need playtime. Effective parenting also includes setting aside some of your own time to play with them.

As easy as it might be to say "yes" every time a young child asks for things, resist falling into that habit. Parenting: A Wonderful Experience If Done Right
